ACTIONS: alterative blood tonic, aperient, astringent, cholagogue, laxative, antipyretic, anodyne (reduces pain and inflammation), clears and promotes cerebral circulation.
INDICATIONS: toxic conditions of the blood, acute skin eruptions such as psoriasis and eczema, swollen glands, glandular tumours, venereal diseases, hemorrhoids, bleeding from the lungs, stomach acidity, reduces high Pitta and inflammation, anemia (particularly caused by Pitta; will worsen a Vata anemia), dysentery, liver disorders, congestive jaundice, bile congestion, rheumatism
PRECAUTIONS: high Vata; emaciation; high oxalate content
CONSTITUENTS: anthroquinone, chrysophanol, emodin, tannins, RUMICIN, oxalates, iron
PREPARATION AND USE:
-two OO capsules or 10-30 drops of tincture tid
-to make a syrup, boil 1/2 lb root in 2 pints water until liquid reduced to 1/2, then add 1/2 pint blackstrap molasses (adds to blood tonic function). Take 1-2 tsp tid
-homeopathic preparation good for tickling cough, itchy skin conditions, scrofulous skin conditions, and glandular swelling
NUTRITIONAL USE: contains lots of iron; can be used in stews like other root vegetables
