Singing and ChantingChanting is one of the most enjoyable parts of my practice. It engages all the parts of the self: the entire body is intimately involved in the production of the sound; the heart supplies the emotional component; in chanting sacred songs the soul is engaged in their messages; the mind memorises the words and melody and then, when things become automatic, it tunes out and we enter our deeper mind to partake of its wisdom. The content of songs and the energy raised by their performance often bring emotions to the surface. This, of course, allows us to heal any stuck patterns we recognise in the memories sparked by these emotions. Because many chants are short and repetitive, one often reaches a point where the songs sing themselves and the mind can tune out or "trance out." At this point, chanting becomes a meditative exercise, allowing the benefits inherent in the relaxation of meditation, and access to our deeper sources of wisdom. And, of course, breathing deeply keeps the blood oxygenated and the heart and lungs strong. So many parts of our being win with this exercise. The energies raised by chanting can also be directed outward with magical intent. Next time you do a working, pick a chant whose message supports your intent and sing it while you visualise your desired outcome. Be clear in your intent that the energy raised by your chanting will be carried into the levels where magic works. See how this amplifies the effects of your work. Below, I have given words to some of my favourite chants. Some of these were shared with me by my favourite trees or places in nature. Most were shared in circles. Where I know the authors I have acknowledged this, but I don't know where many of these songs originate. If you do, I'd be grateful if you'd email me, so that I can give credit where it's due. I've provided an alphabetical list at the top of the page which links to the songs in the document. I've made an effort to give the songs in an order apporpriate to casting a circle, calling the elements, working, and closing. Enjoy! : )
